Amesbury News in Brief

Volunteer drivers needed

Northern Essex Elder Transport Inc., a nonprofit volunteer program serving the elderly in 14 communities of the Merrimack Valley, is seeking volunteer drivers. Volunteer drivers provide door-to-door transportation for the elderly to local and out-of-town medical appointments, essential shopping and social interaction, when other means are either unavailable or unaffordable. Drivers donate their time and use their own automobiles. They are reimbursed 43 cents per mile and are provided supplemental insurance. Volunteers are given an emergency procedures course instructing them on what to do if an emergency arises. For more information, contact the Amesbury Council on Aging and ask for Annmary Connor, COA director, at 978-388-8138. Elders who need transportation should call their local Council on Aging to schedule a ride.
