The Lookout: Author to share family’s stories from WWII

One family’s real experiences in Latvia, Poland and Germany during World War II will be the focus of a book presentation and signing next Thursday at the Emma Andrews Library.

Marina Dutzmann Kirsch spent eight years researching and writing “Flight of Remembrance: A World War II Memoir of Love and Survival.” The main protagonists are her parents, Rolf Dutzmann and Lilo Wassull, who now live in Brentwood, N.H., and sometimes accompany Kirsch to her presentations. In 1939, Dutzmann was a Latvian aeronautical engineering student forced to flee his homeland for Germany, where he met Wassull and began a romance that survived a number of catastrophic circumstances.

The book, which was a finalist in the 2012 USA Best Book Awards, also includes 132 photos from Kirsch’s family archives. Kirsch, who lives in Kensington, N.H., is an active volunteer with the Amesbury Friends Peace Center and the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center in Newburyport.

The free presentation on Oct. 17 will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the library, 77 Purchase St., Newburyport. Signed books will be available for $18.
