Interim town administrator chosen

GEORGETOWN — Selectmen voted unanimously Monday to hire Michael Farrell as the interim town administrator. Chairman Phil Trapani said during the interview process that he hopes this person will eventually become the full-time administrator.

"The past week has been an extremely difficult week for me coming to a decision on an interim town administrator. Each candidate has tremendous experience in public administration, municipal management and within the private sector," said Trapani.

"I had to make sure that my vote would be for the best fit for our town employees even though it is an interim position. In the end, I felt gratified that my decision in voting in confidence for Michael Farrell was unanimous with our board."

Farrell, who lives in Methuen, brings more than 20 years of experience in town government as well as consulting experience to municipalities. He has a master's degree in public administration from Harvard, and was instrumental in creating the Main Street program in Littleton, N.H., which revitalized the downtown area there.

Selectman Evan O'Reilly said that no contract has been signed, so salary details and the terms of employment are not yet available.

According to Trapani, selectmen are working on a contract with town counsel and the Personnel Board, and final background checks will be performed. Farrell is expected to begin working July 13.

"Michael was truly thrilled at this opportunity and is excited to be part of a terrific team in Georgetown," said Trapani.
