Inspector takes job with sheriff's office

NEWBURYPORT — After more than 25 years serving in the Newburyport Police Department, Inspector Harrison Whitney has left for a job at the Essex County Sheriff's office.

Frank Cousins Jr. of Newburyport is the sheriff of Essex County. A spokesman for Cousins said yesterday Whitney is scheduled to start Sunday as the director of civil process.

Mayor John Moak said last week that Whitney's departure means that the layoff of one officer, outlined in the fiscal year 2010 budget that began Wednesday, can now be prevented, as that position can now be funded.

The department is still one officer short of a full staff.
