Police: Thief pedaled away from home with bag of jewelry

Man on bike broke in, took valuable items, officers say

GROVELAND — Police said a man on a bicycle went on shopping spree for valuable jewelry, but not at a store.

They said the man broke into a home late Tuesday morning and that he was seen pedaling away on a blue bicycle with white lettering. Witnesses told police he was carrying a Market Basket shopping bag. Police said thousands of dollars worth of jewelry was taken in the break.

Police Deputy Chief Jeffrey Gillen said the break occurred in a thickly settled residential area off Gardner Street, where forced entry was used to gain entry into a single-family home. He said the owner came home, discovered the break and reported it to police on Tuesday afternoon.

Gillen said the estimated 40 items taken from the home include a Rolex watch, rings, necklaces, earrings and bracelets.

“There was a lot of inexpensive jewelry left behind,” Gillen said.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect in the break.

According to Gillen, two witnesses told investigators that they saw a man on a blue bicycle with white lettering riding away from the home. They described the man as being in his mid- to late 20s, of average height and wearing khaki shorts, a gray shirt and a white hat.

Gillen said one of the witnesses saw the man leaving the area of the victim’s home around 11:30 a.m. and that the man was carrying a white Market Basket bag.

“We are asking residents to be vigilant when their neighbors are away, to be on the alert for anyone seen that matches the description of the suspect riding a bicycle and to call the Police Department with any observed suspicious activity,” Gillen said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Groveland police at 978-521-1212.
