'Books in Bloom' sprouts anew at library

---- — NEWBURYPORT — The Friends of the Newburyport Public Library and Newburyport Horticultural Society are co-hosting a repeat of last year’s successful fund-raising initiative, Books in Bloom, next month at Newburyport Public Library, 94 State St. The event is intended to acquaint visitors with the library’s diverse holdings and to raise funds for both organizations.

Modeled after Art in Bloom, the annual spring event celebrated by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Books in Bloom will highlight books, media, and other resource material from the library that will be represented by floral arrangements. Local floral designers, both amateur and professional, are welcome to participate by creating a floral artist’s interpretation of a book from the library’s collection.

The festive spring soiree is scheduled for Saturday, April 6, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and will include musical entertainment, light refreshments, beer and wine, raffles and silent auctions. Guests will be free to peruse the floral arrangements placed throughout the library. A program brochure will guide guests through the exhibits.

The Friends of the Newburyport Public Library provides library programs and capital improvements to the library that are not included in the city budget. Endowment accounts that have provided income in the past are no longer turning out funds given the current low in interest rates, officials say. This fundraiser is intended to make up some of that difference.

The Newburyport Horticultural Society installs and maintains plantings in various locations around Newburyport that generally improve life in the community. Contributions by the group include the rail trail garden under the Low Street bridge and the Kelley School Community Center gardens.

Tickets are $25 and available for purchase at the library front desk or by calling Debbie Knight at 978-465-3469. Submission forms for floral artists interested in submitting an arrangement for the event are also available at the library.
