---- — AMESBURY —The Amesbury Educational Foundation’s 11th annual Hall of Honor Ceremony will be held Friday, May 10, at 6 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Hall, 5 Sparhawk St. The event will fete the induction of three outstanding individuals: former student Kristy Nelson, former educator Beverly Gulazian and friend of education Cathy Toomey.
Nelson’s accomplishments include working with the White House and First Lady Michelle Obama, the USDA and culinary organizations to implement the “Chefs Move to Schools” program focused on improving our nation’s nutrition by improving menus and food offerings for schools. She also developed the first ever culinary apprenticeship training program for all five branches of the U.S. military. This is a small sampling of her commitment to creating a better world.
Gulazian was the former Social Studies Department head at Amesbury High School. Her passion for teaching social studies inspired her to lead the organization of community service requirements for all Amesbury graduates. This program survives to this day as an exemplary model that demonstrates why students who learn to serve their community will become better citizens. She also brought the Harvard Model UN to Amesbury High School. She continues her example of service to the community through her work as a trained court advocate for the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center.
From her role as one of the founding members of AEFI and past president to her involvement as Pettengill House board member, past president of the Rotary Club of Amesbury and a Rotary “Read to Kids” volunteer and Provident Foundation member, Toomey continually advocates for the children in Amesbury schools. She is one of the biggest cheerleaders for the public schools and the community, which is also exemplified through her work as an owner and broker at Stone Ridge Properties.
In addition to honoring the above Hall of Honor inductees, AEFI will also be awarding up to $25,000 in grant money to fund various innovative educational projects designed by teachers and staff to benefit students attending Amesbury Public Schools. Every school in the district has been awarded AEFI grant money to fund programs that reach all students at every grade level.
Tickets are on sale now for $45 each if purchased by May 2 ($50 per person after May 3), and include dinner, hors d’oeuvres, dessert and a cash bar. All major credit cards are accepted through AEFI’s secure online ticketing system.
