Suspect in 100-mph chase still on the loose

SEABROOK — A high-speed chase involving local and state police Sunday afternoon ended in Lowell when the suspected driver eluded police at a gas station, according to state police.

According to police the chase, which reached speeds of nearly 100 mph, began shortly after 4 p.m. when authorities received word that a man was breaking into cars parked at Chili’s restaurant on Route 1. When spotted, the suspect fled in a white Chevy Blazer and headed south on Interstate 95.

New Hampshire State Police along with local police pursued the suspect at high speeds until he crossed the border into Massachusetts.

State troopers based in Newbury and Andover were alerted and began pursuing the suspect as well. Merrimac and Amesbury police were then given a description of the suspect’s vehicle last seen heading south on Interstate 495. The suspect managed to slip out of sight around the Broad Street area of Interstate 495 in Merrimac and remained elusive until a state trooper spotted the suspect at 5:22 p.m. on Route 133 at Route 38 in Lowell. The suspect then pulled into a gas station and fled on foot when he noticed a state trooper was on his tail, according to police.

After giving chase, a state police trooper lost sight of the suspect and returned back to radio for assistant. State police quickly established a perimeter and with the aid of state police K9 unit, thoroughly searched the area for about 90 minutes before calling off the search, according to media relations state trooper Kenneth Gaetz.

Gaetz said the case is still under investigation by Seabrook police, Lowell police and state police.
