School Committee retreat canceled

Leadership was among topics for discussion

NEWBURYPORT — A School Committee retreat scheduled for last night was canceled due to unforeseen issues related to fallout from Hurricane Sandy.

Officials learned Superintendent Marc Kerble was stranded in Florida, one of thousands of travelers whose flights were grounded during the historic storm.

The retreat was originally scheduled to discuss a number of issues related to school leadership, among other topics.

The official agenda indicated school officials would delve into topics such as leadership structure, form and function; the special education budget, the school budget deficit, and norms and operating principles of the School Committee.

Unofficially, the meeting was also expected to touch on some of the criticism Mayor Donna Holaday leveled at Kerble last week, and the school community’s negative response to the public rebuke.

The School Committee intends to reschedule the retreat, but has not yet set a new date for the meeting.
