HAVERHILL – A Groveland man charged with sexually assaulting a 17-year-old woman in Weare, N.H., then stealing her car, was captured at a Maple Avenue apartment Thursday night and is expected to be returned to the Granite State.
Jonathan Maguire, 20, of 13 Pandora Drive, waived his right to fight extradition to New Hampshire during a brief hearing in Haverhill District Court yesterday. Judge Patricia Dowling ordered him held without bail at Middleton jail pending his return to New Hampshire.
Weare, N.H., police have charged Maguire with two counts of simple assault, obstructing report of a crime, criminal mischief, theft and second-degree assault.
Police went to 114 Old Town Road in Weare at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday after Lisabeth Maguire called to report her son Jonathan was suicidal, according to a report filed by Patrolman Brandon Montplaisir. Jonathan Maguire had cut his wrists and when she made her first attempt to call 911, he broke her cell phone, according to the officer’s report.
Lisabeth Maguire left the house and called police from another location, Montplaisir wrote. Police found a young woman in the basement of the house who said she had been raped by Maguire, according to Montplaisir’s report.
The alleged victim said she had gone to the house to prevent Maguire from hanging himself. She told police he was getting ready to hang himself when she arrived.
When she tried to stop him, he pushed her onto a pool table, choked her until she was unconscious and assaulted her, police said. He then stole her 2003 Jeep Liberty and fled. Police later found the vehicle near Greenleaf School in Haverhill.
After Weare police obtained a warrant for Maguire’s arrest, Groveland police received a couple of tips that Maguire was hiding at an apartment on Maple Avenue, Haverhill, according to Groveland Deputy Chief Jeffrey Gillen.
Detective Meaghan Buckley and Sgt. Stephen Doherty of the Haverhill police, along with members of the New Hampshire Fugitive Task Force and United States marshals, went to the apartment of Andrew Yates at 5 Maple Ave. early Thursday evening. Weare police had warned that Maguire was armed with a knife.
Maguire appeared at the front door with his hands over his head, according to Buckley’s report. He was arrested without incident, she wrote.
Yates, of apartment 16, told police he had been trying to persuade Maguire to surrender to authorities. Police have received a number of complaints about loud gatherings at the apartment, according to Buckley’s report.
A group of young people, ages 16 to 25, was in Yates’ apartment when officers arrived, she wrote.
Maguire is not a stranger to Groveland police, Gillen said. Last November, he pleaded guilty to a home invasion in Groveland and received a one-year sentence in Middleton jail. Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins, who supervises the jail, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
The Maguire family owns homes in Groveland and Weare, Gillen said.
