Leeward Lights' gifts to Community Service top $12,000

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — With its latest check of $3,000, the Leeward Light Thrift Store in Salisbury’s donations to Community Service of Newburyport have surpassed $12,000 since this time last year.

“We would not be able to provide the level of service we do without the generous support of Leeward Light,” said Martha Arias, co-director for Community Service of Newburyport, in a press release.

Community Service of Newburyport is one of four local food pantries that receive monthly donation checks from Leeward Light Thrift Store. The other charities receiving donations are The Pettengill House in Salisbury, Our Neighbors’ Table in Amesbury and the Church of Christ in Seabrook.

In addition, Leeward Light makes annual donations to several home-heating assistance programs.

“The business model allows us to make frequent contributions to our charities throughout the year. This allows them the flexibility to purchase what they need when they need it and perhaps better keep up with the growing demand,” Rob Werner, president of Leeward Industries, Inc., said in the release.

Community Service of Newburyport, Inc. is a privately funded social service agency that was established in 1912. The agency provides a food pantry, clothing, emergency relief and referral services for people in need in Newburyport, Newbury and West Newbury. A picture ID and proof of current address are required to sign up for services. Limited services are available to people from Salisbury and Amesbury as well.
