This Day in History

On this day in 1856, Ben Perley Poore pushed a wheelbarrow full of apples from West Newbury to Boston to complete an election bet that he lost. He was greeted with cheers and the waving of flags by thousands of spectators as he marched to the Tremont House in Boston, escorted by a company of Massachusetts volunteer militia and a band of music playing the popular songs of the day.
