Newburyport observes Veterans Day today

---- — The City of Newburyport will observe Veterans Day today. Those marching will gather on Pond Street in front of CVS at 10:15 a.m. and prepare to parade to City Hall starting at 10:45 a.m.

The Veterans Day program will begin outside Newburyport City Hall at 11 a.m. The program will include an invocation by Lt. Jeff Brunelle of the Newburyport Salvation Army, national anthem by Newburyport High marching band under the direction of Steve Cohen, recitation of the names of recently departed veterans by Mayor Donna Holaday, “Newburyport and the War of 1812” presented by Newburyport Veterans Agent Kevin Hunt, and patriotic music by the high school band.

There will be seating available in front of City Hall, but the public is advised to arrive early to guarantee a seat. If the weather is poor, the ceremony will be relocated to City Hall Auditorium.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., the parade will continue around Market Square, up State Street to Veterans Cemetery at the base of Pond Street. There, Holaday will place a memorial wreath at the monument. There will be a musical selection from the high school band followed by a benediction from Brunelle, a rifle salute by the Newburyport Police honor guard and playing of taps.

In addition, Michael’s Harborside Restaurant on the waterfront will host an invitation-only meal for Newburyport veterans and one guest today. The annual event is sponsored and paid for by Michael’s Harborside to honor Newburyport veterans. The meal is limited to veterans who live in Newburyport. An invitation is required.
