This Day in History

On this day in 1903, there was a mad scramble for coal by local residents. People living in the Northeast were fearing not having enough fuel to heat their homes going into the winter due to a coal workers strike. The Newburyport scramble was described by the Daily News as a “lively scene at the [coal] Pocket when small lots were doled out.”
