Library offers programs during vacation week

AMESBURY — In the coming weeks, athletes from all over the world will gather in Russia for the Winter Olympics, and to celebrate the gathering of nations, the Amesbury Public Library is holding a week of country-themed activities over the February school vacation week.

“School vacation week is always very popular and we try to do programs so as many people can attend as possible,” said children’s librarian Clare Dombrowski. “This year we’re focusing on the countries around the world, partly because of the Olympics.”

The activities will run from Feb. 18 to Feb. 21 and are geared toward children from kindergarten through grade 5, though Dombrowski said the activities are all family-friendly and younger siblings are more than welcome to attend. The programs will be held every day from 10 a.m. until noon, except for Monday, Feb. 17, when the library is closed for Presidents Day.

On Tuesday, the library will start off with a “Mapping the World” program, in which kids will try to reconstruct the continents using felt and a big paper plate.

The program will continue on Wednesday with “Around the World in Fashion,” in which kids will go from station to station creating clothing from around the world, or at least miniature versions for paper people.

Then on Thursday, the library will host a “Traditional Mask” making exercise, when kids will get to create their own masks using an example from history, including masks inspired by African, Japanese, American and other cultures from around the world.

Finally, the week will conclude on Friday with the popular “Lego Play” activity, in which kids will have a couple of hours to build with Legos.

“Legos are eternally popular,” Dombrowski said.

Dombrowski said all of the programs are free and there is no registration required. She said the programs offered over school break are typically well attended, and last year several dozen kids came out for each.
