Projected school budget deficit shrinks slightly

NEWBURYPORT — Superintendent Susan Viccaro gave a brief update to the School Committee Monday on the present budget situation for this year. A budget deficit of approximately $581,000 had been estimated at the end of last year.

However, Viccaro told the committee that, while final numbers are still to be determined, current projected deficit stands at just below $500,000.

She said there are additional special education costs, including legal expenditures, and additional leave-of-absence costs that have transpired. But she added that additional revenue, including higher than anticipated circuit breaker reimbursements, are helping to offset the increased expenditures.
