This Day in History

On this day in 1838, Colonel Charles Leonard Ayers was born in Portsmouth, though he soon moved to Newburyport with his widowed mother. He is known for his distinguished military service as second lieutenant in the Third Unattached Company that defended Fort Pickering and Fort Lee in Salem.
