Winter Carnival postponed to Jan. 25

NEWBURYPORT — A forecast of heavy rain and warm temperatures has prompted Winter Carnival planners to postpone this weekend’s event until Saturday, Jan. 25.

“After two years running of canceling the event altogether, it was difficult to make the decision not to hold it this weekend,” said Parks Administrator Lisë Reid. But co-organizers Newburyport Youth Services and Reid agreed that the warm temperatures would cause slushy ice conditions, and holding the event on the thawed lawn without a snow cover would cause damages to the Bartlet Mall.

“Volunteers have done such a great job creating a beautiful skating surface, I am confident their efforts will pay off in two weeks,” Reid said.

The event is sponsored by the Institution for Savings and the Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank. For more information or to volunteer, contact Reid at 978-465-4462,
