Newburyport Daily News
---- — On this day in 1814, William Coombs, Esq., owner of Coombs Wharf on Water Street, passed away.
So remarkable was his physical condition, even at his advanced age, that two years prior, at the age of 76, he saved a 9-year-old boy from drowning in the Merrimack River.
Throwing off his hat and wig (very outdated at the time) he leaped from the wharf, caught the child in his arms and saved him.
A medal depicting the rescue was presented to him by the Merrimack Humane Society.
