HAMPTON, N.H. — An Amesbury man was seriously injured Wednesday morning after his truck struck a tree on Route 1, trapping him in his car.
Daniel Nikas, 66, was driving south on Lafayette Road in the area of Tri-Rent-All at about 9:40 a.m. when the white GMC Canyon pickup truck hit a tree, according to Hampton police.
Nikas was alone in the truck and had to be extricated from the vehicle by Hampton Fire and Rescue. He was transported to Portsmouth, N.H., Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, police said. A hospital spokeswoman yesterday said Nikas had been transferred to a Boston hospital, but declined to identify the facility.
The single-vehicle accident closed the southbound lanes of Lafayette Road from Drakeside Road to Tri-Rent-All for about 30 minutes, while Nikas and the truck were being removed.
The truck suffered heavy front-end damage and was towed by Dana's Towing and Repair of Hampton.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. Witnesses are asked to contact Hampton police at 603-929-4444.
