Hospital reports 'banner year' for finances, achievements

NEWBURYPORT — Officials of Anna Jaques Hospital have reported a “banner year” in terms of financial results and program initiatives.

The hospital announced a positive gain in operations of more than $1.75 million, which leaders say represents a 1.5 percent profit margin. The announcements were made at the hospital’s corporators meeting, and reflect the results of the 2013 fiscal year.

It was the eighth consecutive year that the organization has achieved a positive bottom line, officials say. Officials expressed satisfaction with achievement of goals of its five-year strategic plan, including the following:

Completed the Virginia A. Capolupo Outpatient Entrance

Opened the Gerrish Breast Care Center, which received significant funding from the Gerrish Family Foundation

Increased deliveries in its birth center by 8.5 percent, which represented a statewide high in terms of percentage growth

Expanded its clinical affiliation with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. One result is that it has enabled the hospital to expand its maternal-fetal-medicine services for high-risk pregnancies.

“Five years ago, the hospital established a strategic plan that included specific goals and strategies that would ensure high-quality patient care and safety, and a superior patient experience,” said David LaFlamme, chairman of the hospital board, in a statement. “With the community’s support, those plans have come to pass.”

Hospital officials also elected four new members to the AJ Community Health Foundation and more than a dozen new corporators.

Those elected to terms on the community board were Kathy Bechtel, owner, Italiaoutdoors Food and Wine; Melissa Foley, registered nurse and community volunteer; Kevin Gasiorowski, owner Appleton Eye Associations; and Matt Khatib, owner, M.K. Benatti Jewelers.

New corporators include the following: Heidi Bassler, DVM, Linda Bogdanoff, Chris Bouton, Kate Bouton, Martha Bower, Susan Christ, Fontaine Debus, Kimberly Foulkes, Kevin Gasiorowski, OD, Thomas Haywood, City Councilor Meghan Kinsey, Hilary Larson, Todd Newman, Lisa Purinton, Gary Rawnsley, Jean Trim and Mary Williamson.
