This Day in History

Newburyport Daily News

---- — On this day in 1859, what is arguably Newburyport’s most famous ship, the Dreadnaught (aka “The Wild Boar of the Atlantic”), was pushed to her limits by Captain Samuel Samuels and arrived at Liverpool, England. It took 13 days and eight hours. She fell just seven hours short of the fastest record set by the Red Jacket. It is interesting to note that a sea captain of Jewish descent in America in the 19th century was a rarity.
