---- — NEWBURYPORT — Greencore Group PLC, a company that makes sandwiches and other convenience foods, has announced it will close its Newburyport plant beginning in April 2015.

The facility is located at 2 Opportunity Way in the Business and Industrial Park.

In 2008, Greencore entered the local market by purchasing Home Made Brand Foods. The organization, based in Dublin, Ireland, employs 11,000 worldwide.

The firm has 233 workers in Newburyport, according to company officials.

“Greencore USA plans to transfer our Massachusetts operations to a new facility in Rhode Island,” Che Knight, a spokeswoman for Greencore, said yesterday.

As a result of the project, Greencore will close its existing facilities in Newburyport and Brockton on a phased basis between April and September 2015.

“Employees will be offered the opportunity to take up roles at the new facility, and Greencore headquarters will remain in Danvers,” Knight added.

A company statement said the company is developing a facility in Rhode Island in order to be closer to Eastern cities such as New York.
