---- — NEWBURYPORT — Owners of the Screening Room have announced they have tentatively reached their goal of raising $60,000 to convert to digital technology, but the campaign is not over yet.

Co-owner Andrew Mungo said that $60,850 has been raised from 609 backers.

Upon exceeding $60,000, Mungo said, “We reached our goal, but the reality is that the transition to digital projection is just our first hurdle. We’re not out of the woods yet.

“We have two other major concerns: the added cost of maintaining this new digital equipment and the simple fact that some of our other equipment (like screen, seats, speakers, etc.) is also reaching end-of-life.”

He has described the 99-seat venue as “modestly profitable” but had indicated that without help from patrons, it could not continue.

Mungo used kickstarter.com, an online application, to raise funds.

Industry analysts said that only about 3 percent of pledges are not collected with this system, in part because credit card numbers are given when a pledge is made.

Mungo’s message to potential contributors has been, in part, “The Screening Room needs your help. 35MM film is about to go the way of the 8-track. We need to go digital to keep the screen lit up.”
