Dance will benefit programs in Port's 'sister city'

NEWBURYPORT — The Greater Newburyport/Bura Alliance, a member of Sister Cities International, will hold its annual African dinner dance on Saturday. The event that begins at 6 p.m. at the Elks Hall, 25 Low St., is a family-oriented event.

Proceeds will support projects in Bura, Kenya, which has been connected to the Newburyport area for the past 21 years as part of the Sister Cities program.

The evening begins with a buffet dinner featuring a wide variety of African food. A dance follows with African and American dance music orchestrated by Kenyan James Nyette. In addition, there will be an African crafts bazaar and a live auction. Included in the auction will be a weekend at a summer house on Lake Conway, a kayak trip with lobster dinner in Casco Bay, an overnight at a B&B in Friendship, Maine, and an African story quilt.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner is served at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door. Prices are $25 for adults, $15 for students and free for those under 12 years old. There is a maximum $50 per family ticket price.

Current projects that the group is involved in include providing school uniforms and school fees for 30 HIV/AIDS orphans, working with an orphans’ care providers’ group, supporting an e-learning project at the Bura Primary School, an agroforestry project and a GNBA soccer league that involves 30 different schools.

Further information about the dance or GNBA’s monthly meetings may be obtained by contacting Ted Van Nahl or Joanna Hammond at 978-388-3230.
