---- — AMESBURY — Following the success of last year’s Election Day food drive, Our Neighbors’ Table will once again host a food drive outside the polls during next Tuesday’s city elections.
Amesbury High School students will have a table set up outside the high school cafeteria, and voters will be able to drop off their donations any time between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. while the polls are open. Amesbury voters cast their ballots at the high school.
“Last year’s drive was a huge success,” said Our Neighbors’ Table executive director Lyndsey Haight. “We collected over $1,000 and dozens of crates of food. It was our first Election Day food drive and the student turnout and voter turnout in support of Our Neighbors’ Table was much more than we’d ever expected. So we’re thrilled to have permission to do it again and have the students re-engaged during the local election.”
Our Neighbors’ Table will also be partnering with the Boy Scouts as part of the annual “Scouting for Food Drive” to benefit hungry families in the community, which Haight said is one of their biggest food drives of the year.
Bags were dropped off around the city last weekend, and residents who received bags are encouraged to fill them with food and leave them out in front of their house so they can be picked up tomorrow.
“Whether or not people got a bag, they can still fill their own bag and leave it out and the Boy Scouts can come and collect it,” Haight said.
Residents not on the Boy Scouts’ map should call organizer Cheryl Boyd and let her know they have a bag of food ready, or they can drop their bag off at Sparhawk High School on Saturday before 2 p.m.
According to Our Neighbors’ Table, the most needed items are canned chicken, canned meals (such as ravioli, beef stew and spaghetti and meatballs), gravy, stuffing, canned fruit, soup, family-sized jars of peanut butter, shampoo, deodorant and diapers of any size but 3.
