Italian-themed dinner a fundraiser for Doughboy, memorial restorations

“A Taste of Italy” is coming to town next weekend. The Doughboy and Amesbury Veterans Memorial Restoration Fundraiser dinner will be held Saturday, April 26, at the Costello Transportation Center. Sponsored by the Amesbury Police Officers Association with Rosemary and Jack Werner and Dr. Maris DiTolla, the dinner will benefit the effort to restore the WWI Doughboy statue in front of the middle school as well as 17 other veteran/war memorials in the city.

Tickets are $15; children 12 and under are free with a paying adult. The meal is themed “A Taste of Italy.” Homemade chicken Parmesan with ziti and marinara sauce will be served along with spring salad and bread. Cynthia Costello will provide the entertainment with classic Italian-themed music. The first seating will be at 5:30 p.m., the second at 7.

With the Brownfields cleanup of the Heritage Park Project scheduled to begin later this month, comings and goings on the bike path along the banks of the Back River will become a bit more challenging.

The public will not have access to the part of the path between the former Public Works facility at 27 Water St. beginning April 21. An alternate route will be marked and the detour will be in place for the majority of the summer.

Chief historian and curator of Mechanical Arts at Old Sturbridge Village Tom Kelleher will examine how water power worked and the crucial role mills played in early America at the Costello Transportation Center on May 4. The Amesbury Carriage Museum is hosting the speaker, who has spent over 28 years at Old Sturbridge Village. Kelleher has worked at the living history museum as a costumed historical interpreter, supervisor of the mills, coordinator of historic trades, research historian and program coordinator. The local event will be called “Old Mills and Water Power” and will run from 2-4 p.m.
