Bus registration on two days next month

Parents expecting to take advantage of school bus transportation next year must sign up in August in order to ensure a spot. August registration will be offered at $275 per student, with a $550 family maximum, on the following dates:

Tuesday, Aug. 4, 9 a.m. to noon.

Thursday, Aug. 6, 9 a.m. to noon.

Thursday, Aug. 6, 5 to 7 p.m.

Registration will be located at the Superintendent's Office, 70 Low St. (Nock Middle School) and is for students of Newburyport Public Schools, River Valley Charter School and the Immaculate Conception.

Students entering sixth grade and younger and living outside a 2-mile distance as measured by Yahoo maps, are eligible for mandated free transportation.

The date has been set so parents can mark their calendars for the next Newburyport Education Foundation Lighthouse Auction, scheduled for Nov. 14. Last fall's auction raised nearly $40,000 toward the organization's three-year goal to reach $100,000 and fund literacy closets throughout the district, virtual high school and a number of other educational programs not otherwise covered in the school budget.

The class of 2010 is seeking crafters for their Nov. 7 Craft Fair, which they hope will help raise money for class activities. The fall event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the cost for space is $75 per vendor. For an additional $10, a table and electricity is offered. The Newburyport Elementary School PTO is looking for volunteers to help staff a kitchen on the 2009 Annual Kitchen Tour later this month. The tour runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 26, and shifts run for 2 ¬½ hours each. The job entails greeting guests of the tour when they arrive and ensuring the homes are treated with respect during the five-hour tour. Each volunteer will receive a free ticket to the tour, and organizers are also seeking contributions of baked goods for the event.
