Barnard School seeks mural artist

SOUTH HAMPTON — After receiving a gift of money from the recently graduated eighth-grade class, the Barnard School is seeking painters and multimedia artists to create an installable mural, on canvas, board or other medium, for hanging in a sitting area in the school's hallway.

The class, upon donation of the gift, had asked for the piece to include 13 students — five boys and eight girls, representing the graduating class — doing some of the following: putting up the flag; carrying in/out the guitar case; bringing in/out the recycling bucket; playing 4-Square; shooting hoops; approaching the school bus at the stop; and in uniform, kicking a soccer ball. It could also include the school's mascot, a hawk, or the school's motto, "Honor, Achievement, Wisdom and Kindness."

Proposals can take many forms but are asked to include a short statement talking about what the overall piece will look and feel like and why the artist wants to get involved; rough figure drawings of three or more students doing the tasks described; a rough drawing of the overall composition with the correct aspect ratio; and a few Web links to or copies of previous works the artist has done and works that will inspire this particular project.

The wall space available for the mural is 553รขÑ4 inches high by 87 inches wide. Because the piece can be installed, work can be done in a personal studio and delivered. The deadline for the completed mural will be sometime around Labor Day, or around when school begins. The total gift donated for materials and time, $593.06, will be given in full to the artist when chosen for the project.

Proposals will be accepted until July 31. To submit a proposal, contact Principal Barbara Knapp at bknapp@sau21.org or Chris Asbell at casbell69@hotmail.com or mail it to Chris Asbell at 219 Main Ave., South Hampton, N.H. 03827.
