Mothers Club announces a new name

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Mothers Club has changed its name. The club will now be known as the Greater Newburyport Mothers and Families Club (GNFC).

The club, started in 1999, was developed by a handful of mothers hoping to make connections within the community and offer support to one another at one of the most joyous yet isolating times in one’s life. The club is now a social and community–focused organization with more than 900 members.

“We are extremely excited to make this announcement as we believe it is a better reflection of the current state of our club,” said Kelly Marshall, president, Greater Newburyport Mothers and Families Club. “Although to some a name change may not seem overly significant, for our club it is a necessity so that we may meet the ever-changing needs of our organization and, more importantly, the community we so proudly represent.”

The name change is a result of two major factors. There is a common misconception in the community that the club only serves those who live in the city of Newburyport. In reality, half of our membership comes from the surrounding communities of Amesbury, Boxford, Exeter, Georgetown, Groveland, Haverhill, Ipswich, Kingston, Merrimac, Newbury, Rowley, Salisbury, Seabrook, Topsfield and West Newbury.

There are also more and more “non-mothers” joining the club. Many fathers have been welcomed into the club as well as some grandmothers and a handful of other family caregivers.
