---- — Hundreds of guests gathered at Atkinson Common on Saturday to remember and reflect at the city’s Civil War memorial during a rededication of the restored tablets that commemorate the war and the 1,500 Newburyport veterans who served.
The “Tablet Day” event included speeches from several local and city officials, as well as a reading of the names of Newburyporters who served in the war, which appear on the tablets.
The ceremony was modeled after the 1913 ceremony at Atkinson Common, during which the memorial was originally dedicated. Mayor Donna Holaday presented the same speech read by Mayor Hiram Landford at the original dedication and a similar musical selection was performed.
