Woman thrown from car on I-495

MERRIMAC — An unidentified woman suffered serious injuries after being thrown from a car on Interstate 495 yesterday afternoon, state police said.

State troopers arrested two Lawrence men shortly after the incident, which was reported at 3:38 p.m. The state police barracks in Newbury received numerous calls about a woman being thrown from a moving vehicle onto the northbound side of the highway south of Broad Street, according to state police Lt. David Richard.

The Merrimac Fire Department and ambulance were also immediately dispatched to the scene, where emergency responders discovered a woman suffering from serious injuries. The victim was transported to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport by ambulance and then taken by medical helicopter to a hospital in Boston.

One of the people who reported this incident was an off-duty police officer, who told state police the make and model of the vehicle from which the woman was thrown, Richard said. Additionally, this off-duty officer gave the location of the suspect vehicle, allowing troopers to stop the vehicle on I-495 southbound, south of the rest area in Merrimac.

The two men in the vehicle were taken to the Newbury state police barracks. As of last night, the driver, Henry Matos, 45, had been arrested and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol. Moises Matos, 43, was placed in protective custody.

Asked what other charges might be lodged against the Matoses, Carrie Kimball Monahan, spokeswoman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett, said last night that remains under investigation.

Henry Matos will definitely be arraigned in Newburyport District Court this morning, she said. If Moises Matos is charged, he will also be arraigned in that court. The alleged victim, whose identity is not being released, was in serious condition last night, Richard said. The incident is being investigated by troopers assigned to the Newbury barracks as well as the Essex District Attorney’s Office.
