City to observe Veterans Day Monday

Pasta dinner, walking tour round out weekend of activities

On Sunday, the Elks Club on Low Street in Newburyport will host a free Pasta Dinner for veterans at 1 p.m. Reservations are not required; all veterans are welcome to the annual event.

Also on Sunday at 2 p.m., Bill and Liz Hallett will lead a “Footsteps of Heroes: Civil War Walking Tour of Newburyport.” The 90-minute tour will begin and end at 57 State St., in front of Arthur Page Insurance Company.

Some of the featured sites and stories will include the home of a prominent citizen and presidential hopeful who was a close friend of Jefferson Davis, the location where Frederick Douglas spoke out against slavery on his visit to the Clipper City, the story of the first recruits who left Newburyport at Lincoln’s call to put down the rebellion, the building where Capt. Albert Bartlett worked at his family’s dry goods store before becoming a casualty at the Battle of Antietam, the story of a POW and how he used the name Newburyport in a far-away place, the story of a man raised in Newburyport who became a Confederate general and more.

A suggested $5 donation is requested for the tour with proceeds benefiting Belleville Improvement Society, which cares for Newburyport’s Civil War Monument at Atkinson Common along High Street.
