O'Connor Ives begins job as state senator

NEWBURYPORT — Former City Councilor Kathleen O'Connor Ives was sworn in as First Essex District state senator on Wednesday at the Statehouse.

She succeeds former state Sen. Steven Baddour, who resigned last spring.

“I'm honored to join the state Senate and am ready to get to work," said the 35-year-old Democrat in a statement.

“In the immediate future, I'll be focused on meeting with municipal leaders to discuss their concerns and priorities so we can be effective partners. I also look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate.”

O'Connor Ives, a lawyer, was elected three times as city councilor at-large here beginning in 2007.

She resigned from the council effective Jan 1.
