ROWLEY — A local man listed online as one of the state’s most wanted fugitives remains in California following his arrest by authorities there earlier this month.
Upon his release from jail in November to begin his probation for multiple domestic assault and battery offenses, William Sciretto, 42, formerly of Fenno Drive, not only left Rowley but fled from the state entirely, according to local police Chief Robert Barker.
According to local police, Sciretto attacked his wife on Dec. 28, 2011, shattering her right foot and bruising her right arm. He was eventually arrested as a result of the alleged incident and was subsequently incarcerated.
As part of his conditions for his release, Sciretto was required to wear an electric monitoring bracelet. But instead of reporting to have the bracelet installed, Sciretto fled the state.
“He just disappeared,” Barker said.
As recently as last month, Sciretto was still in the state and living in Tewksbury as he was issued a summons by local police on Sunday, Dec. 16, on three counts of violating an abuse prevention order.
“We had numerous domestic incidents down at that residence so he was well known to us,” Barker said, referring to Sciretto’s former Rowley address.
Barker said he was notified of Sciretto’s arrest, but said he didn’t know where in California the defendant was staying or when he may be returning to Massachusetts.
A call and an email to the Essex County District Attorney’s office seeking more information regarding Sciretto’s possible arrival was not returned in time for this edition.
Sciretto is listed on the Massachusetts Most Wanted website, maintained by the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council. The database, featuring dozens of fugitives wanted on assault, bank robbery, drug offenses and other serious charges, is a tool used by law enforcement agencies across the state to enlist the public’s help in taking dangerous offenders off the streets.
