Sidewalks must be shoveled by today

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — While many businesses and residents have done an extraordinary job keeping their sidewalks clear and safe of snow, some have not. The City of Newburyport Health Department would like to remind businesses and residents to help keep sidewalks safe and secure for students and pedestrians by shoveling their sidewalks in a timely manner. It’s not only neighborly, it’s also the law.

The Health Department has allowed a reasonable amount of time for business or residential property owners to address the issue and we are asking businesses and residents for their help by complying with this important city ordinance.

The Health Department was out on Saturday to remind business and property owners of the requirement to shovel walkways. The city would prefer not to issue tickets; however, any business or property owners whose sidewalks remain unshoveled by today may be issued fines by the Health Department.

The Council on Aging is striving to connect residents with teenagers interested in earning extra money shoveling. Anyone interested in hiring a teen can email pmcalarney@cityofnewburyport.com and type “shoveling help” in the subject line, or call 978-465- 4410. The Health Department will forward requests to the Council on Aging.
