---- — NEWBURYPORT — Mayor Donna Holaday has announced that former Amesbury firefighting officer William F. Shute has been selected as the interim fire chief here.
He replaces Stephen Cutter, who retired last week after 34 years with the department.
Shute retired as fire chief of Amesbury in 2008. Shute, who was with the force for 27 years, was promoted to chief in 2003.
Shute has a bachelor’s degree in fire science administration and has had training in officer management training, incident command system, basic hazardous materials, technical rescue and is a certified fire inspector and investigator, city officials say.
He is a member of various associations, includingthe International Association of Fire Chiefs, International Association of Arson Investigators (Massachusetts Chapter), Massachusetts Fire Chiefs Association, Massachusetts Fire Prevention Association, Essex County Fire Chiefs Association and the Seacoast Chief Fire Officers Association.
Shute will continue as interim chief until a permanent chief is hired, Holaday said.
City officials have launched an initiative to hire a new chief and have received 45 applications for the position.
