---- — NEWBURYPORT — Parenting and child development expert Joani Geltman will appear Thursday, Nov. 21, at the Nock Middle School at 7 p.m. delivering a special presentation titled “Adolescent Psychology: The Parent Version,” covering the topics of physical, cognitive, social and emotional changes that occur in adolescence and how they affect relationships with family and friends.
The event, sponsored in part by The Newburyport Five Cents Savings Bank, is free and open to the public. The talk was rescheduled from last month.
Geltman is the first of three speakers scheduled to visit the region in the Navigating the Parenting Years 2013-2014 Speaker Series, a collaboration of Newburyport Youth Services, River Valley Charter School Parents’ Alliance and RVCS Dads, and the Rupert A. Nock Middle School PTO. Winter and spring speakers will include former basketball player Chris Herron and author Michael Thompson. Geltman’s presentation will address how to differentiate high expectations from unrealistic ones, how to identify and deal with experimentation, how to set limits so that teens will want to follow them and how to, as Geltman says, “teen-proof” your home and relationships.
Geltman, an adjunct professor at Curry College, holds a master’s of social work degree and has been a therapist, parenting consultant and coach for more than 30 years. She has presented to hundreds of communities, schools and businesses on the topic of adolescent development.
