1"Does anyone know who that man is?" she asked.
"Your husband?" one of the earnest 9-year-olds answered.
Actually, the politician with whom she was posing was Sen. John Kerry. But the moment provided both a laugh and a learning experience for the 9-year-old triplets from Newburyport.
Last fall, the Newburyport Education Foundation hosted its annual Lighthouse Auction, and Holaday committed to offering a "lunch with the mayor."
The top $180 bid was placed by Megan Ashe. Yesterday, the Lavalley Lane mother cashed in on her prize, bringing along her three daughters, Hanna, Kiara and Lena, to share lunch with the city's top-ranking leader.
Holaday led the girls on a brisk show-and-tell tour of municipal offices before they set off to The Black Cow on the waterfront for some lunch.
"The girls got great exposure to City Hall and a look at how many people it takes to run a community," said Ashe, who with her husband, Terry, have lived in this city for 16 years.
"They liked the City Council chambers and were impressed with how many names have been written into the (interiors of) the councilors' desks. To think that the city has had 68 mayors, it shows how much history this city has."
Megan Ashe said her daughters were also impressed by the photos on corridor walls of Newburyport soldiers who lost their lives in past wars.
The girls, who will be entering fourth grade this fall, were bubbling when they returned home, their mother said.
"The girls were exposed to the work of local government today," she said. "The mayor was very friendly and answered their questions about why she ran and what she likes about the job.
"They learned about the history of Newburyport, and the tour provided them with their own memories of the city as they go forward."
