Pine Grove students doodle for Google

Every year, the students at Pine Grove School led by the efforts of art teacher Jen Dubis complete drawings for the Doodle4Goggle art contest. The annual contest, sponsored by Google.com, invites students nationwide in kindergarten through grade 12 to use their artistic talents around a certain theme to redesign the company’s homepage.

This year, students were asked to create a drawing around the theme “My best day ever ....” The winning student’s artwork will be displayed on the Google home page and the winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for their school, along with other prizes.

An in-school Doodle4Google contest was also held at Pine Grove. The winners got to select an item from the Artsonia gift shop with their artwork printed on it. The winners by grade are:

First grade: Hailee Callix, Sophia Lesinski and Lauren Manning

Second grade: Lily Lotarski, Maeve White and Emily Sousa

Third grade: Alison Heil, Mia Berardino and Christian O’Connell

Fourth grade: Emily Borshers, Elijah Jodz and Stone Butler

Fifth grade: Abigael Joliffe, Emily Colby and Weston Bartlett

Sixth grade: Gillian Nichols, Kayla Collins and Alice Thornton

Dubis said she expects to send at least 50 entries to the nationwide contest. The deadline for student entries is Friday. Any student is invited to participate.

The last day to pick up nomination papers to run for town office in the May 14 election is Friday. Nomination papers, which require signatures of 27 registered voters, are due back to Town Clerk Susan Hazen by Tuesday, March 26.

Hazen reported last week that John Noyes of Plantation Drive picked up nomination papers to run for the Board of Selectmen, as did Dave Petersen of Newbury Road, who had previously taken out papers for the water board. Incumbent Selectman G. Robert Merry has also taken out papers to run again.
