Youth triathlon team forms

Newburyport Youth Services is organizing a youth triathlon team whose members will be training to compete individually and in teams at the Dam Tri in Amesbury this summer. Other competitive events will be scheduled for open water swimming, running and cycling. Sean McCarthy and Andrew Soracco, both experienced coach/athletes, will provide the training re gimen. The team has already secured sponsorship from Riverside Cycles, Greater Boston Running Co., CW Keller Associates and Port Racing.

The team, which is open to ages 13 and up, will focus on the long-term benefits of endurance training and a healthy lifestyle. An information night is set for Wednesday, March 27, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Kelley School Youth Center on High Street. It is open to interested athletes, coach/training volunteers and sponsors. Salvation Army seeking volunteer hairdressers

The Salvation Army in Newburyport is seeking two more volunteers to provide free haircuts for adults and children on Friday, April 19, from noon to 4 p.m. The service will be provided to all area families at the agency’s Care Fair and Open House. Anyone interested in volunteering should call Donna at 978-465-0883, ext. 12.

Eco Games at Joppa Flats Center

Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center at One Plum Island Turnpike in Newburyport will be swimming with family fun about the sea on Sunday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Eco Games Free-for-All is a full day of activities centered around ocean creatures, from whales to sea turtles, and ocean topics, from shorebird protection to sea level rise. Participants will learn about ocean sustainability and conservation efforts on the coast with fun, informative activities like fishing simulations, solar boat model building and art projects. The free event for all ages and will be held rain or shine.
