Programs at Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats

NEWBURYPORT — Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats Education Center, One Plum Island Turnpike, is a natural history education and visitor center that is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and Monday holidays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mass Audubon members receive discounts on programs. Call 978-462-9998 for information about additional programs and events, or visit the website at www.massaudubon.org/joppaflats. Groups meet at the education center unless otherwise noted.

THE WONDER AND THE WOW: SPRINGTIME AT ROUGH MEADOWS

Family educator Lisa Hutchings takes adults only outside to discover the wonders of spring coming to the Great Marsh in Rowley.

Saturday, April 28, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Fee is $17. Registration is required.

FAMILY DAY AT THE BIRD BANDING STATION

Bring the family to the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge for an exciting, up close look at migrating birds as they are netted and evaluated before releasing. The Bird Banding Station is only open at the height of migration in spring and fall. For families with children age 6 and up.

Saturday, April 28, or May 6, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Fees are $8 for adults, $5 for children. Registration is required.

Join Dave Larson, Joppa Flats Education coordinator, to look for spring migrants in Mass Audubon's newest wildlife sanctuary: Rough Meadows in Rowley.

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIRDING

Join Joppa Flats Sanctuary director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. Appropriate for all birding levels.

Dates: Wednesdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fee is $17. Registration is not required.

WEDNESDAY EVENING BIRDING

Join sanctuary director Bill Gette to look for springtime birds during the quiet part of the day.

Dates: Wednesdays, May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Fee is $12. Registration is not required.

HOME-SCHOOL FIELD TRIP: BIRD BANDING BONANZA

Celebrate the end of the year with a visit to the Bird Banding Station followed by a mini-birding competition. Teacher is Lisa Hutchings.

Thursday, May 3, 9 to 11:30 a.m. Fee is $17. Registration is required.

IMAGINE, SING AND LEARN: THE MIGHTY MERRIMACK

Active play and learning with Joppa Flats Teacher-Naturalist Lisa Hutchings for preschoolers, ages 3 to 5, with a favorite adult. Choose one of four sessions. Fee includes one adult and one child.

Dates: Thursday, May 3, 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2:30 p.m.; Friday, May 4, 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2:30 p.m. Fee is $15. Registration is required.

FRIDAY MORNING BIRD WALKS: FOCUS ON WARBLERS

SATURDAY MORNING BIRDING

Weekly trip with experienced leaders in a search for avian activity in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. It's migration season, and the birds are plentiful! For beginners and birders of all skill levels.

FAMILY FLYBY AT JOPPA FLATS: GARDENING FOR WILDLIFE

Fly by or settle in for free-flowing nature fun. Crafts, experiments, games, scheduled presentations and more for families with children ages 2 to 12.

Come on a gentle three-mile stroll and enjoy the spring birds in Topsfield's beautiful natural landscape.
