Students win art awards

Several high school students recently received Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards. The Scholastic Art Awards is one of the longest running recognition programs for teen artists in the United States. Each work is reviewed by a panel of arts professionals for originality, technical skill and emergence of personal vision or voice. More than 900 winning pieces are on display at the state Transportation Building at 10 Park Plaza until March 19. Winning Silver Key Awards for artwork demonstrating achievement worthy of recognition on the regional level were Andrew Coolidge and Erin Flaherty for photography. Winning Honorable Mentions for artwork demonstrating artistic potential were Jackie and Casey Decareau and Andrew Coolidge for photography; and Maggie Nelson for mixed media.

The Georgetown Education Foundation gala will be held March 6 at the Sheraton Ferncroft in Danvers. The theme this year is "Georgetown Gala: It's a Jungle Out There." Money raised will be put toward technology in the schools. Tickets may be bought online at the GEF Web site, www.georgetowneducationfoundation.net.

The winter Olympics are coming to the Penn Brook School on Friday. The day will begin with a running of the Olympic flame and opening ceremonies. Students will then represent different countries in noncompetitive games outdoors. Part of the lessons that day will be sportsmanship, teamwork and respect.

There will be no school Feb. 15 to 19 for vacation week.

Ten high school students will go to the Marriott Copley Hotel in Boston to compete in the state competition of the DECA program. The competition will take place March 4 to 6, and students will do a variety of entrepreneurship activities to try to win a spot in the national competition, which is in Nashville, Tenn., this summer. Also included in the weekend are speakers, workshops, and opportunities to network with sponsors and meet other students interested in entrepreneurship. Faculty adviser Lisa Ryer will accompany the students, who will be holding a few small fundraisers to help offset the $350 per student cost.
