Programs at Mass Audubon's Joppa Flats

---- — NEWBURYPORT — Mass Audubon’s Joppa Flats Education Center, One Plum Island Turnpike, is a natural history education and visitor center that is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday and Monday holidays, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mass Audubon members receive discounts on programs. Call 978-462-9998 for information about additional programs and events or visit www.massaudubon.org/joppaflats.

Activities and outings meet at the education center unless otherwise noted.

FALL MIGRANTS IN BOSTON

Paddle with Plum Island Kayak in the Merrimack River to see seals as well as the birds of local mudflats and tidal creeks.

TAKE A WALK ON THE WILDSIDE: TIDE POOL TREASURE HUNT

Spend quality time with your family as Lisa Hutchings takes you on eye-opening experiences in our natural neighborhood. This month, we go out to look at tide pools. For families with children ages 7 through 11.

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIRDING

Join Joppa Flats Sanctuary Director Bill Gette and USFWS veteran David Weaver for this weekly birding field trip in the Newburyport/Plum Island area. Appropriate for all birding levels.

Wednesday, Oct. 10, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Fee $17. Registration is not required.

AFTERSCHOOL AT JOPPA: SURVEY THE SUBTIDAL ZONE

Children in grades 1 to 4 are invited to engage in wildlife learning experiences with a different theme each week. Come for one or sign up for the series.

PARENT/CHILD WALKABOUT: CATCH, DIG & TRAP AT ROUGH MEADOWS

Come outside with Lisa Hutchings to explore the ecology, sights and sounds of our local habitats as we look for critters at Rowley’s Rough Meadows. A fun, energetic format for families with children ages 3 to 6. The fee covers one adult and one child. Choose morning or afternoon session.

Friday, Oct. 12, 10 to 11:30 a.m. or 1 to 2:30 p.m. Meet at Rough Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary, Rowley. Fee $15. Registration is required.
