The Newburyport High School Class of 1947 celebrated its 65th reunion on Sept. 25 at Stripers Grille in Salisbury. It started with a reception and cocktail hour; the invocation was given by Phyllis Barth Packer and she then read the list of departed members since the last reunion. There was a moment of silence for all of our departed members, who now total 58. This was followed by an excellent meal.
After the meal we had a 50-50 raffle drawing, which was won by Ruth Drown Sullivan. We then drew the winners of 10 Lottery tickets.
Edward Sullivan than gave a short talk on “Remember When,” referring to what was happening in 1947.
A raffle was then conducted to raise money to support our reunion efforts. The dozen prizes were donated by the reunion committee and class members.
It was noted that two classmates, Geraldine Haley Candreva and Veulah Courage Hawkins who couldn’t attend, made generous donations to help defray reunion expenses.
Jean Wade Doyle gave a brief talk about 20th century Newburyport, explaining what led her to research and publish her two volumes on Newburyport.
Centerpieces made by Janet Webster Sheehan were won by classmates sitting in marked chairs.
The class agreed to have a 66th reunion in 2013.
A class picture was taken and will be sent to all who attended and also those who responded but did not attend.
