Architect to highlight Port as 'Work of Art'

Newburyport Daily News

---- — NEWBURYPORT — Author and architect Jonathan Hale presents “Newburyport is a Work of Art” on Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Custom House Maritime Museum on Water Street in Newburyport.

Hale has written and lectured extensively about Newburyport in his work as a consultant to other cities across the country. His book, “The Old Way of Seeing,” which was published by Houghton Mifflin in 1994, uses Newburyport to show the high level of design that was once widespread and has now become almost a lost art, he says.

Hale was the developer as well as the architect of several historic property renovations in and near Boston and he has written design guidelines for new communities in Spokane, Wash., and Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. Based in Waltham, he has degrees in architecture from Harvard University and the Boston Architectural College.

Hale’s presentation is intended to be a practical guide, illustrated with photographs he has taken of Newburyport during the 40 years he has visited and admired the city. He will be available to answer questions at the end of the program as well as meet attendees at a reception to follow.

The program goes from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by the reception. A $10 donation is requested at the door. For more information, visit www.nbptpreservationtrust.org.
