---- — NEWBURYPORT — The sesquicentennial of the Civil War commemoration continues with what will be the final Civil War walking tour of Newburyport on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m.
Author William Hallett and his wife, Elizabetha, will lead the Footsteps of Heroes outing.
The 90-minute walking tour will highlights the sites and stories of Newburyport’s Civil War history, including Albert W. Bartlett and the first troops who left the Clipper City, stories of the shipyard, a local politician (and dear friend of Jefferson Davis) who almost ran against Lincoln for president, stories of Frederick Douglass’ visit a Newburyporter who would become a Confederate general and more.
The tour begins and ends at 57 State Street, the Arthur Page Insurance Co). Participants should wear appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes. In honor of Veterans Day, a $5 donation is requested, which will be donated to the Belleville Improvement Society for restoration of Newburyport’s Civil War memorial tablet walls at Atkinson Common.
