Driver seriously hurt in I-495 crash

MERRIMAC — A Hudson, N.H., man sustained life-threatening injuries yesterday around 5:30 a.m. after his tractor-trailer rolled over on Interstate 495 in Merrimac near exit 53 at Broad Street.

John Daly, 49, was first transported to Lawrence General Hospital via Merrimac ambulance and then flown by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious leg and head injuries, according to state police.

State police Trooper Kenneth Gaetz said the crash is still under investigation, but according to a preliminary report released late yesterday afternoon, it appears the victim was operating a 2011 Freight Cascade in the center lane when he swerved to the right to avoid a set of tires left on the road. The maneuver caused the truck driver to veer right across the right lane and breakdown lane, eventually crashing into the wood line.

Daly was trapped inside the truck’s cabin until emergency personnel could free him from the wreckage, state police said.

Following the crash, state police said they contacted area police departments to be on the lookout for another tractor-trailer, which may have been involved with the incident.

The crash closed the right and center travel lanes of the north side of the highway and the on-ramp to Broad Street for about four hours to allow for rescue operations, investigation and clean-up of the crash. Traffic was backed up all the way to exit 52, as Merrimac and Amesbury firefighters and paramedics responded to the crash. Troopers from the Newbury barracks also responded, according to state police.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police, State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, and Crime Scene Services Section.
