Female injured jumping from car on I-495

AMESBURY — An unidentified female was hospitalized yesterday after she jumped out of a moving vehicle on I-495 southbound near the Merrimac line and was nearly hit by a truck.

According to state police, the female jumped from her vehicle at approximately 2:13 p.m. near Exit 53 and was injured when she struck the roadway. The victim was subsequently transported to Lawrence General Hospital, and police could not confirm the extent of her injuries at that time.

State police spokesman Kenneth Gaetz said the victim wasn’t hit by passing vehicles after she jumped, but she was nearly struck by an 18-wheeler trailing behind that narrowly avoided hitting her.

After the incident was called in, state troopers based out of Newbury responded to the scene, along with Amesbury EMS and a Medflight unit. Once the victim’s condition was assessed, the Amesbury Fire Department took her to the hospital via ground ambulance. No vehicles crashed as a result of the incident.

Police still aren’t sure why the victim jumped from the vehicle, and Gaetz said the situation is still under investigation. State police also couldn’t confirm reports that the victim suffered road rash and a broken pelvis as a result of the accident.
