School gets $45K grant to install solar panels

NEWBURY — The Governor's Academy has received a $45,610 stimulus funding award to place solar panels on top of its alumni gymnasium.

The 33.11 kilowatt array is being funded as part of federal stimulus funds and is distributed through the state's Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

This is the second round of awards under the Commonwealth Solar Stimulus program, which funds solar projects. Commonwealth Solar Stimulus has awarded funds to 102 solar projects throughout the state in total, installing 7.8 megawatts of power.

"This second round of Commonwealth Solar Stimulus grants will continue to add more megawatts of solar power to Gov. Patrick's goal of 250 megawatts of solar energy by 2017," said Carter Wall, executive director of the Renewable Energy Division at Mass. Clean Energy Center, in a prepared statement. "We look forward to seeing these systems and more up and running, and producing clean, renewable energy for the people of Massachusetts."

The second round of $4 million in rebates opened April 9 and was fully subscribed in less than an hour. The funding comes from $8 million in State Energy Program funding awarded to the Department of Energy Resources under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
